Meaning “roasted tea” in English, Hojicha Tea is a unique brew made by roasting bancha leaves over high heat. The resulting brew features slightly nutty and charred tasting notes with a mild smokiness and amber appearance. The product of the distinctively Japanese practice of letting nothing go to waste (and the innovative thinking of one Japanese merchant),a Kyoto trader in the 1920s experimented with roasting leftover bancha leaves and stems over glowing charcoal to create a new tea that minimised excess waste - Hojicha was born and is now one of the most popular teas in Japan!
Hojicha Tea is best enjoyed whilst curled up with a book and blanket in the evening. This tea is perfect as is - the delicate toasty flavours in this brew may be marred by the addition of milk and sweeteners.

"Something a bit different to regular green tea or black tea. I unfortunately don’t enjoy Japanese sencha very much, finding it too grassy, but toasting it brings out the best of its flavour. It might be good as a replacement for matcha in sweets and things. I first tried hōjicha in a cheap teabag from Daiso, and it was still good and even better with a dash of milk and some sugar, like a matcha latte. Tea Centre’s blend can also take some milk and sugar, but that might feel like a waste of the loose leaf tea with stems and leaves. I can imagine it making a nice ice tea. Its dry flavour is more for older people than younger people. Part of the reason I bought it was its general lower caffeine levels. It doesn’t put me to sleep, but it hasn’t made me wired either. Interestingly, it’s “Hōjicha” on the website but “Houjicha” on the packaging. I guess the printing software doesn’t have an ō"
