What is Pu-Erh?
Originating from the mist-shrouded mountains of Yunnan Province, China, Pu-Erh tea boasts a rich heritage spanning over a millennium. Named after the town of Pu'er, this esteemed variety is distinguished by its unique fermentation and ageing process, endowing it with a distinctive flavour profile cherished by tea aficionados worldwide.
How is Pu-Erh Made?
Pu-Erh tea is manufactured in a slightly more complicated and lengthy process than your average black tea. Following harvest, tea leaves undergo a series of steps including withering, rolling, and sun-drying. As a result, they undergo microbial fermentation, a transformative process that imbues the tea with its characteristic earthy undertones and nuanced aroma.
The tea is then dried as a loose leaf tea (like our Pu-Erh Tea), or compressed into cakes or bricks (such as our Mini Tuo Cha Pu-Erh), and left to mature for extended periods ranging from years to decades. This yields a brew of unparalleled depth and complexity.
