Amazing Ayurveda

Leave your drugs in the chemist’s pot if you can heal the patient with food. – Hippocrates

Here at The Tea Centre we are often quizzed about our Ayurvedic range of spicy tisanes, which include Anti-StressBreathe Easy, and Power Mix. Generally, the questions are centred on whether each of these blends really live up to their respective names.

While tea and tisanes provide an abundant source of beneficial properties, we need to remember that they are merely one part of a holistic approach to improving our wellbeing. This concept also relates closely to the theory behind Ayurveda, which is a traditional Indian form of medicine that is commonly practised the world over. Ayurveda is all about addressing problems with our dosha — our Ayurvedic body type, and the balance of mind, body, and spirit through means of meditation, massage, and particularly diet.

While our wide selection of herbal teas serves to meet many different purposes, our Ayurveda range is thus named due to the eastern inspired combination of spices. Cinnamon and cardamom are the base ingredients that occur predominantly in these blends as they are such popular spices that are often utilised in Ayurvedic remedies. They are especially useful in aiding digestive problems such as nausea, bloating, loss of appetite, and many other maladies. When it comes down to it, our tummies tend to be the first to endure the side effects of stress and sickness. This is where our Ayurveda range of blends can be handy in aiding the diet aspect of holistic therapy.

However, what makes each blend unique to their suggested function is the combination of ingredients…

Anti Stress

Citrus and spice create an unbeatable combination in this deliciously warming tisane. If the aroma of freshly baked cookies could be turned into a beverage, Anti Stress would be the resulting product. While the dried spices produce a strong and spicy scent, the brew is in fact quite soft and pleasant on the palate. In terms of helping eliminate stress, it contains liquorice root, which is conducive to restoring our adrenal glands; these are responsible for producing the stress hormone cortisol. If your stomach is feeling tight from stress, cinnamon and ginger will help relax these muscles.

Breathe Easy

During these winter months, a lot of us will be susceptible to the cold and flu inducing effects of the season. There’s nothing worse than that congested feeling, but with Breathe Easy, you can now do just that.  This is a spicy and sweet, yet effective concoction. In addition to the base ingredients, a few other herbs and spices really make the difference. As an antiseptic herb, the use of thyme has been known to help with chest and respiratory problems, as well as providing an excellent source of vitamin C, and a very good source of vitamin A. Mallow root is great for soothing sore throats and reducing dry coughing. Just some of the pharmacological activities of wool flowers suggest that it is good as an anti-inflammatory, a source of antioxidants, an antibacterial, and also good for wound healing. Finally, preliminary studies show that turmeric may help reduce the severity of bacterial and viral infections.

Power Mix

Power Mix similar to the taste of Anti Stress, yet somewhat spicier due to the addition of cloves, ginger, and green peppercorns. As a result, this combination leaves a lovely savoury aftertaste. This uplifting blend also contains juniper berries which are known for stimulating and treating joint pain and chronic conditions. The introduction of ginger is also effective in overcoming brain fatigue, and restoring warmth to the extremities by aiding sluggish circulation. So whether you need some holistic healing or you’re just in the mood for a warming winter treat, one of these spicy brews could be just what the dosha ordered.
